Sherman G. Alexander (Bud) was born in February 1934 to Sherman and Florence Alexander in
Sherrill, New York.
He graduated from Sherrill Central School in 1952 and continued his education at the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956.
His first sea duty assignment was aboard the USS Los Angeles (CA-135). He was selected for Submarine School and subsequent to this training he was assigned to USS Piper (SS-409) and USS Grouper (SS-214).
Early in 1958, Sherman married Barbara at the Submarine Base Chapel in Groton, Connecticut.
In 1963, he completed the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School and a second Baccalaureate degree, this time in Electrical Engineering.
After graduation from PG school, LT Alexanderreported aboard the USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630) as the Gold crew Weapons officer. He made two deterrent patrols on the Calhoun.
In 1966 he reported to the SUBLANT staff in Norfolk, Virginia. After SUBLANT, he served as Executive Officer of the USS Bang (SS-385), and then as Commanding Officer of USS Cobbler (SS-344) from 1969-1971.
In addition to his sea tours, he served on the CINCLANT staff, OPNAV staff, and was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Strategic Systems at SUBLANT. He was also Commanding Officer of the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois from 1980 - 1982. He became Chief of Staff at COMSUBMED Naples, Italy in 1982 where he served until 1983.
His final tour took him to Washington, DC where he was the Senior Military Assitant for Strategic, Aeronautical, and Theatre Nuclear Systems at the Department of Defense Research & Engineering at the Pentagon. Captain Alexander retired in 1986.
Bud began a second career with Advanced Technology Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia. Later, ATI merged with PRC, a company located in Arlington, Virginia. At PRC, he was the department manager for Undersea Warfare.
In the spring of 1996, he retired from PRC and he and his wife moved to St. Petersburg, Florida to their retirement home. Barbara passed away in May 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.
In August 2005, Bud married Judith. They moved to their current address, a new town home, in St. Petersburg.
Bud's hobbies include golf, boating, reading and writing.
During his naval career, he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and Meritorious Service Medal. He has also been the recipient of the Navy League John Paul Jones Award for Inspirational Leadership.
Bud has been a steady and helpful member of the JCCVA. He was instrumental in developing our Mission Statement.
He fulfills his civic duties with the Tax Aide Volunteer for AARP, Submarine League, American Legion, and the USS John C. Calhoun Veterans
